In 2020, the New York City Council passed Local Law 102, directing the Department of Buildings to evaluate the use of unmanned aircraft systems (drones) to support building envelope inspections alongside required hands-on examinations.
In 2023, NYC established formal rules and guidelines for drone operations. To legally take off or land a drone in New York City, individuals or organizations must obtain a permit from the New York Police Department (NYPD) and secure authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), ensuring full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
